At Furrowfield School, we recognise that comfort, wellbeing and a sense of belonging are essential foundations for successful learning. As a specialist school for students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, we understand that sensory sensitivities can have a significant impact on a student's ability to engage confidently in school life. In response to this, we have worked closely with students, families and a local company to develop a sensory-friendly uniform that prioritises comfort, inclusion and dignity whilst maintaining a smart and professional appearance. This reflects our commitment to removing barriers to learning and ensuring that every student is able to participate fully in school life. The development of our sensory-friendly uniform is part of our wider commitment to creating an environment that supports emotional regulation, wellbeing, attendance and positive engagement.
Our bespoke school polo shirts have been specially designed using high-quality sports-performance fabric, chosen for its soft texture, breathability and flexibility. The material is lightweight, durable and comfortable to wear throughout the school day, helping to minimise distraction and discomfort for students with sensory processing difficulties. We have also developed a soft sensory-supportive jumper made from carefully selected materials that provide warmth and comfort whilst reducing irritation often associated with traditional school knitwear.
Students are expected to wear black tailored trousers as part of the school uniform. Where appropriate, softer fabric options, including fleece-lined styles, may be worn to support specific sensory needs whilst maintaining a smart presentation. Black socks are compulsory and we encourage the use of bamboo-material socks wherever possible. Bamboo fabrics are exceptionally soft, breathable and can be manufactured with minimal seams, providing additional comfort for students who experience tactile sensitivities.
To maintain consistency and reduce unnecessary distractions, students should wear all-black shoes or trainers with no visible logos, branding or coloured markings. This ensures that footwear remains practical, comfortable and suitable for school whilst promoting equality across the school community.
During warmer weather, students may wear tailored black shorts as an alternative to trousers. Shorts should be smart in appearance and similar in style to tailored school wear rather than sports or leisurewear. This flexibility ensures that students remain comfortable while continuing to meet the school's expectations regarding presentation and readiness for learning.
For Physical Education, students may wear either a plain white T-shirt or a sports shirt, together with sports shorts that they feel comfortable participating in physical activity whilst wearing. We recognise that confidence and comfort are important factors in encouraging participation in sport and physical activity and therefore provide flexibility within our PE kit expectations whilst ensuring suitability for active learning.
Our sensory-friendly polo shirts and sensory jumpers are available to purchase directly from school through a not-for-profit approach. This ensures that high-quality specialist uniform items remain affordable and accessible for all families. We firmly believe that school uniform should support wellbeing rather than create barriers, and our approach reflects our ethos of Together We Succeed. By listening to our students and responding to their needs, we have developed a uniform that promotes comfort, inclusion, self-esteem and readiness to learn, helping every student to feel safe, supported and valued as part of the Furrowfield School community.
