BIG Award

Furrowfield School's Commitment to Bullying Prevention

At Furrowfield School, we are committed to creating a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where every child feels valued, respected and able to achieve their full potential. We are proud to have achieved our first BIG Award in 2023 and continue to work closely with Mrs Lydon and the Bullying Intervention Group (BIG) to ensure our anti-bullying practice remains effective, up to date and responsive to the needs of our pupils.

Through regular awareness activities, peer support initiatives and individual pupil sessions, we actively promote positive relationships and challenge bullying in all its forms.

What is the BIG Award?

The Bullying Intervention Group (BIG) runs a nationally recognised award scheme, endorsed by Kidscape, which celebrates excellence in bullying intervention and prevention. The award recognises schools and organisations that demonstrate a strong commitment to creating safe, inclusive environments for children and young people.

How We Meet the BIG Award Standards

To achieve and maintain the award, Furrowfield School demonstrates:

  • A dedicated Bullying Intervention Focus Group
  • A robust Anti-Bullying Policy
  • Regular staff training and professional development
  • Active involvement of parents and carers
  • Peer support and mentoring opportunities for pupils
  • Ongoing awareness-raising activities
  • Pupil voice through testimonials and feedback
  • Effective recording, monitoring and review of bullying incidents

These measures ensure that our approach to bullying prevention is embedded throughout school life and remains focused on the needs of our pupils.

Why the BIG Award Matters

Achieving the BIG Award demonstrates that Furrowfield School:

✅ Works to an externally recognised standard of excellence

✅ Embeds consistent and effective anti-bullying practice

✅ Promotes inclusion for all children and young people

✅ Tailors support to meet individual needs

✅ Helps pupils learn and thrive without fear of bullying

✅ Actively promotes equality, dignity and respect for everyone

The award reflects our commitment to ensuring that every child can enjoy their education in a safe and supportive environment.

Supporting Inclusion and Wellbeing

Our anti-bullying work forms an important part of our wider commitment to inclusion, equality and wellbeing. Through proactive intervention and education, we help pupils develop positive relationships, build resilience and understand the importance of respect and kindness.

This work also supports our responsibilities under the Equality Act by helping us monitor and address discrimination while fostering a culture where everyone feels safe, valued and included.

Our Ongoing Commitment

The BIG Award is not simply an achievement—it is part of our ongoing journey to provide the very best support for our pupils. We continually review our practice, listen to the voices of our young people and work with families and professionals to ensure Furrowfield School remains a place where everyone can flourish.

Together we can create a school community where bullying is challenged, inclusion is celebrated and every child feels safe to succeed.
