Beginning with the fundamental skills of drawing and observation, pupils progressively build their confidence and technical ability through a wide variety of artistic disciplines, including painting, textiles, printing, sculpture, ceramics, portraiture, and mixed media.
We encourage pupils to explore the work of artists, designers, and craftspeople from a range of cultures, periods, and artistic movements. Through studying artists and creating their own responses, pupils learn how art reflects personal experiences, history, identity, and the wider world. Opportunities for cross-curricular learning, local history projects, and links with cultural organisations such as the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art further enrich pupils' experiences and broaden their cultural capital.

As pupils progress into Key Stage 4, they refine their practical skills and deepen their understanding of the creative process through observation, artist research, experimentation, development, evaluation, and the production of personal outcomes. Pupils are encouraged to think critically, solve problems creatively, and make informed artistic decisions, preparing them for accredited qualifications and future pathways in education, employment, and the creative industries.
