SMSC and Curriculum Drop-Down Days at Furrowfield School

At Furrowfield School, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is an integral part of our curriculum and plays a vital role in preparing students for life beyond school. Through our ethos of 'Together We Succeed" and the values of the Furrowfield Way, we provide meaningful opportunities for students to develop as confident, respectful, reflective and responsible members of society. SMSC is woven throughout daily school life, embedded within lessons, assemblies, enrichment activities, therapeutic support and wider personal development opportunities. Our approach enables students to develop a strong understanding of themselves, their communities and the wider world while promoting tolerance, empathy, resilience and respect for others.

A particular strength of our SMSC provision is our programme of dedicated curriculum drop-down days, which allow students to engage in immersive, cross-curricular learning experiences.

These include Remembrance Respect Day, where students explore themes of remembrance, service, sacrifice and community through activities delivered across all subject areas.

Heart to Heart Day promotes emotional wellbeing, positive relationships, mental health awareness and personal reflection, supporting students to develop emotional literacy and self-awareness. This also includes CPR training for all students and staff.

International Museum Day provides opportunities to explore history, culture and heritage, helping students to develop curiosity and an appreciation of diverse societies and achievements.

Our annual Futures Day encourages students to consider their aspirations, career pathways and future ambitions, supporting preparation for adulthood and raising aspirations. These events create memorable learning experiences that deepen students’ understanding of the world and their place within it.

Assemblies form another important part of our SMSC programme and provide regular opportunities to explore themes such as kindness, respect, diversity, equality, British Values, protected characteristics, mental health, citizenship and personal responsibility. Through assemblies, students are encouraged to reflect on moral issues, celebrate achievements, learn about significant national and global events and develop an understanding of current issues affecting society. Assemblies reinforce the values of the Furrowfield Way and help cultivate a strong sense of belonging within our school community.

Our SMSC provision is further strengthened through our commitment to the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award. Students learn about children's rights and responsibilities, develop an understanding of fairness and equality, and are encouraged to use their voice to contribute positively to school life.

Through our Student Council, debates and wider opportunities for student leadership, students learn the importance of democracy, participation and active citizenship, helping them become informed and responsible members of societies.

Supporting local, national and international charities also forms an important part of SMSC development at Furrowfield School. Students actively participate in fundraising and community projects, developing empathy, compassion and a commitment to helping others. Events such as the Macmillan Coffee Morning, alongside other charitable initiatives throughout the year, provide opportunities for students, staff, families and the wider community to come together in support of important causes. Through these experiences, students learn about social responsibility, community engagement and the positive difference they can make in the lives of others.

Through this rich and varied programme of experiences, Furrowfield School ensures that students develop the knowledge, skills, values and character needed to thrive in modern Britain. Our SMSC curriculum enables students to become respectful, reflective and compassionate individuals who are well prepared for future education, employment and active participation in society, living out our ethos that Together We Succeed.
