SMSC and Curriculum Drop-Down Days at Furrowfield School

At Furrowfield School, SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development is a central part of our curriculum, and is delivered through a carefully planned programme of Curriculum Drop-Down Days that enrich and extend students’ learning beyond the classroom.

These events are a key element of our commitment to supporting students’ personal development, ensuring that they are prepared for life in modern Britain as responsible, respectful and informed citizens.

Intent

Our SMSC programme is designed to:

  • Develop students’ understanding of the world around them
  • Promote respect, tolerance and inclusion
  • Support the development of moral awareness and empathy
  • Build confidence, independence and resilience
  • Prepare students for their future pathways and adult life

Through this approach, we ensure that SMSC development is meaningful, relevant and accessible for all students within our SEMH context.

Implementation

SMSC is delivered through a structured programme of Curriculum Drop-Down Days, where all curriculum areas come together to explore key themes in depth.

These include:

  • Remembrance Day – focusing on reflection, respect and community
  • Heart to Heart Day – every child receives age-appropriate first aid and CPR training, helping them develop practical lifesaving skills, confidence, and an understanding of emergency response.
  • International Museum Day – promoting cultural awareness and understanding of history
  • Futures Day – supporting aspirations, careers education and preparing for adulthood

These days are carefully planned to ensure that students engage in a range of discussion, reflection, creative and collaborative activities, allowing them to explore important themes in a safe and supportive environment.

Through this cross-curricular approach, staff are able to adapt learning to meet the needs of all students, ensuring meaningful participation and engagement.

Impact

Our SMSC and Curriculum Drop-Down Days have a strong impact on students’:

  • Personal Development – developing confidence, self-awareness and life skills
  • Behaviour and Attitudes – promoting respect, responsibility and positive relationships

Through our SMSC provision, Furrowfield School ensures that students experience a broad, balanced and enriched curriculum, where learning is connected to real-life experiences and supports the development of the whole child.

This provision is particularly important within our SEMH setting, as it supports students to build confidence, improve relationships and develop the skills needed to engage positively with others.
