Character Education and Personal Development at Furrowfield School

Character Education and Personal Development Across the Curriculum

At Furrowfield School, Character Education and Personal Development are not confined to one subject; they are woven throughout our entire curriculum and daily school life. We believe that developing the whole child is just as important as academic success, and every subject contributes to preparing our pupils for adulthood, employment, and active participation in society.

Across all curriculum areas, pupils are supported to develop key character traits including resilience, independence, respect, responsibility, confidence, empathy, and aspiration.

  • English develops communication, self-expression, emotional literacy, confidence, and the ability to understand different perspectives.
  • Mathematics encourages resilience, problem-solving, logical thinking, perseverance, and independence.
  • Science promotes curiosity, critical thinking, enquiry, teamwork, and informed decision-making.
  • History and Geography help pupils develop empathy, cultural awareness, respect for diversity, and an understanding of local, national, and global issues.
  • Art provides opportunities for creativity, self-expression, emotional wellbeing, confidence-building, and personal reflection.
  • Physical Education develops teamwork, leadership, resilience, self-discipline, communication, and healthy lifestyles.
  • Food Technology promotes independence, responsibility, organisation, healthy living, and practical life skills.
  • Computing develops digital citizenship, problem-solving, creativity, resilience, and responsible use of technology.
  • Futures provides a dedicated pathway for developing wellbeing, relationships, careers education, financial literacy, citizenship, and preparation for adulthood.

Alongside our taught curriculum, pupils develop character through enrichment activities, educational visits, leadership opportunities, community engagement, therapeutic support, careers experiences, and positive relationships with staff and peers. These experiences help our pupils build the confidence, skills, and personal qualities needed to overcome barriers, achieve their aspirations, and thrive in modern society.

Ultimately, our aim is for every pupil to leave Furrowfield School as a confident, resilient, and compassionate young adult, equipped with the knowledge, skills, values, and character needed for a successful and fulfilling future.
