At Furrowfield School, attendance is a key priority and a fundamental safeguarding responsibility. We recognise that regular attendance is essential for students to access their education, engage in learning and achieve positive outcomes.
In line with national expectations and statutory guidance, including Working Together to Improve School Attendance, we take a proactive and rigorous approach to promoting, monitoring and supporting attendance across the school.
Attendance, Achievement and Life Chances
High levels of attendance are directly linked to improved attainment, stronger engagement in learning and successful outcomes for students.
Students who attend school regularly are more likely to:
- Make sustained academic progress
- Develop confidence and resilience
- Build positive relationships with staff and peers
- Access the full curriculum, including therapeutic and enrichment provision
Conversely, low attendance can have a significant impact on learning, wellbeing and future opportunities. For this reason, we maintain high expectations for attendance for all students, ensuring that every student is supported to attend school consistently and succeed.
No Holidays During Term Time
At Furrowfield School, we are clear that holidays must not be taken during term time.
Term time is essential not only for academic learning, but also for the delivery of therapeutic provision, pastoral support and personal development opportunities.
In line with statutory guidance, requests for leave of absence during term time will only be considered in exceptional circumstances and must be authorised by the Head Teacher.
This ensures that all students are able to access their full entitlement to education and support.
Attendance and Safeguarding
Attendance is closely linked to safeguarding. At Furrowfield School, we recognise that absence, particularly persistent or unexplained absence, may be an indicator of vulnerability, including potential safeguarding concerns.
As part of our safeguarding procedures, we:
- Monitor attendance daily and identify patterns of concern
- Follow up absences promptly with parents and carers
- Work in partnership with external agencies where appropriate
- Escalate concerns in line with safeguarding procedures
This ensures that all students are accounted for, safe and receiving the support they need.
Our Commitment
At Furrowfield School, we are committed to maintaining high levels of attendance for all students. Through clear expectations, strong monitoring and a supportive approach, we ensure that students attend regularly, feel safe and are able to succeed.
By promoting excellent attendance, we are supporting students to achieve positive outcomes, improved wellbeing and the best possible life chances.
