At Furrowfield School, we are committed to helping our pupils use the internet safely, responsibly and positively. The online world provides valuable opportunities for learning, communication and entertainment, but it is important that children and young people understand how to stay safe while using digital technology. To help children stay safe online, we encourage families to focus on three key areas:
Content
Understanding the apps, websites, games and videos young people access online.
Communication
Ensuring online interactions are safe, respectful and age-appropriate.
Conduct
Promoting responsible digital behaviour and knowing how to respond to concerns such as cyberbullying, scams or inappropriate content.
By working together, we can help pupils develop the knowledge, confidence and resilience needed to navigate the online world safely.

The internet provides access to a vast range of information, resources and opportunities for learning, creativity and communication. While much of the content available online is positive and beneficial, some websites, apps and online platforms may contain material that is inappropriate, misleading or potentially harmful for children and young people. This can include content that promotes violence, discrimination, unsafe behaviours, self-harm, eating disorders, gambling or other age-inappropriate material. It is therefore important that parents, carers and school staff work together to help children navigate the online world safely and responsibly. The guidance documents below provide practical advice to help families:

Social media and online networking platforms provide valuable opportunities for young people to communicate, learn and stay connected with others. However, it is important to remember that not everyone online is who they claim to be. Some individuals may hide their true identity, which can present risks to children and young people. Parents and carers are encouraged to take an active interest in their child's online activity and regularly discuss who they are communicating with online. If you believe your child is being contacted by someone you do not know or trust, most social media platforms allow users to block and remove contacts. If you have concerns about your child's online interactions, safety or wellbeing, please contact the school for advice and support. Where there are concerns about criminal activity or immediate risks, these should also be reported to the police.
