Food Technology Curriculum

Food Technology Curriculum Intent

At Furrowfield School, we believe that Food Technology provides pupils with essential life skills that promote independence, health, wellbeing, and preparation for adulthood. Our Food Technology curriculum is designed to meet the diverse needs of our pupils, including those with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism, Cognition and Learning difficulties, and Complex Needs. Through practical, engaging, and accessible learning experiences, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to make informed choices about food and nutrition throughout their lives.

Our curriculum is centred around the development of practical cooking skills, food preparation techniques, kitchen safety, and healthy living. We believe that all pupils should have opportunities to develop independence through hands-on learning, enabling them to prepare a range of dishes safely and confidently whilst developing essential life skills that will support them beyond school.

Throughout Key Stage 3, pupils develop their understanding of healthy eating, nutrition, food hygiene, and food provenance. They learn how to follow recipes, use kitchen equipment safely, measure ingredients accurately, and evaluate the sensory qualities of food. Through units such as baking, seasonality, cultural foods, and healthy eating, pupils gain an appreciation of the importance of balanced diets whilst developing creativity and confidence in the kitchen.

We place a strong emphasis on developing independence and decision-making skills. As pupils progress through the curriculum, they are increasingly encouraged to plan, prepare, adapt, and evaluate recipes whilst demonstrating safe and hygienic working practices. Opportunities to reflect on and improve their work help pupils build resilience, problem-solving skills, and self-confidence.

Our curriculum also fosters an appreciation of cultural diversity through the exploration of foods from around the world. Pupils investigate ingredients, traditions, and cooking methods from different cultures, helping them to develop respect, curiosity, and an understanding of how food connects people and communities globally.

At Key Stage 4, pupils build upon their knowledge and practical skills through more advanced food preparation and planning activities. They learn to research recipes, prepare shopping lists, manage ingredients, work collaboratively, and produce increasingly complex dishes independently. Through studying cultural cuisine, baking projects, menu planning, and cooking for pleasure, pupils develop the confidence and competence required for further learning and everyday adult life. Pupils also work towards recognised AQA Unit Awards and BTEC Home Cooking Skills qualifications, celebrating achievement and supporting progression pathways.

Ultimately, our intent is that every pupil leaves Furrowfield School with the practical skills, nutritional knowledge, and confidence to prepare food safely, make healthy choices, and live as independently as possible. We aim to foster a lifelong appreciation of food, cooking, and healthy living whilst equipping pupils with valuable skills that will support them in education, employment, and adulthood.
