World Book Day 2026 was a fantastic opportunity for students and staff at Furrowfield School to come together and celebrate the power of reading. Throughout the day, students engaged in a range of reading-based activities designed to inspire curiosity, spark imagination and promote a lifelong love of books.

At Furrowfield, we believe that reading is fundamental to academic achievement, personal development and future success. Reading not only provides access to learning across the curriculum but also helps students develop confidence, communication skills and a deeper understanding of the world around them. Through books, students can explore different ideas, cultures, experiences and perspectives, helping them become informed, reflective and empathetic members of society.

World Book Day provided an opportunity to showcase the vibrant reading culture that exists across our school. Students explored a wide range of texts, shared book recommendations and participated in activities that encouraged discussion, creativity and a genuine enjoyment of reading. The day reflected our commitment to ensuring that reading is embedded in all aspects of school life and accessible to every learner.

Our dedicated Reading Room was at the heart of many of the celebrations, offering students a welcoming space to discover new authors and texts. With access to a diverse collection of fiction, non-fiction, biographies, graphic novels, poetry and magazines, students were encouraged to broaden their reading horizons and engage with stories that both reflect their own experiences and introduce them to new viewpoints.

The event also highlighted the importance of reading beyond the classroom. Through our Reading for Enjoyment and Reading for Careers programmes, students understand how strong literacy skills contribute not only to academic success but also to future education, employment and training opportunities. Reading equips young people with the knowledge, vocabulary and confidence needed to navigate an increasingly complex world and make informed decisions about their futures.

Most importantly, World Book Day reflected the values of the Furrowfield Way. Reading encourages students to be inquisitive learners, reflective thinkers and imaginative individuals. By fostering a culture where books are valued and reading is celebrated, we continue to support our students in developing the cultural capital, literacy skills and confidence they need to thrive both within education and beyond.
