On Friday 25th September 2026, Furrowfield School welcomed students, parents, carers, governors and members of the wider school community to our annual Macmillan Coffee Morning, raising valuable funds for the outstanding work of Macmillan Cancer Support. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for our school community to come together in support of an important charitable cause while celebrating the values that sit at the heart of the Furrowfield Way and our ethos of Together We Succeed.
This year's event once again linked closely with the European Day of Languages, creating an engaging and meaningful cross-curricular learning opportunity for our students. This year, the focus was on Spanish, with students encouraged to use their Spanish language skills when welcoming guests and ordering refreshments. It was fantastic to see students putting their learning into practice in a real-world context, using Spanish vocabulary and phrases with increasing confidence when interacting with parents, carers, staff and visitors.
The event demonstrated how language learning can extend beyond the classroom, giving students the opportunity to communicate for a genuine purpose while developing their confidence, cultural awareness and understanding of other languages and traditions. Using Spanish in an authentic setting helped students to recognise the practical value of their language learning and encouraged them to take pride in developing new skills.
The coffee morning also reflected many aspects of our commitment to personal development, which remains a central feature of the Furrowfield curriculum. Students played an active role throughout the morning, welcoming guests, serving refreshments, using their Spanish, helping with activities and contributing to the warm and inclusive atmosphere. These experiences supported the development of important life skills, including teamwork, responsibility, independence, communication and positive social interaction, while promoting kindness, respect and community engagement.
It was particularly pleasing to welcome so many parents and carers into school for this special occasion. Their support helped to create a genuine sense of community and partnership, demonstrating the strong relationships that are so important to the success and wellbeing of our students. Events such as the Macmillan Coffee Morning provide valuable opportunities for families to share in school life, celebrate our students and contribute to causes that make a difference to others.
Throughout the morning, visitors enjoyed a wonderful selection of homemade cakes, refreshments and activities, while learning more about the work of Macmillan Cancer Support and celebrating the richness of different languages and cultures. The generosity shown by everyone who attended was greatly appreciated, and the funds raised will help support individuals and families affected by cancer.
The event was another excellent example of how Furrowfield School brings together academic learning, personal development, character education, citizenship and community involvement. By combining charity fundraising, Spanish language learning and family engagement, the Macmillan Coffee Morning provided a memorable and purposeful experience for our students.
