At Furrowfield School, we are committed to ensuring that our students develop a deep understanding of history, citizenship, respect and remembrance through our SMSC curriculum. As part of this commitment, we recently held a dedicated Remembrance Day, bringing together students, staff and members of the wider community for a truly memorable and moving experience.

The entire day was devoted to remembrance, providing students with meaningful opportunities to learn about the sacrifices made by those who have served in the Armed Forces and to reflect upon the importance of remembrance within modern society.

One of the highlights of the day was the arrival of a full-size Spitfire on our school site. This remarkable centrepiece immediately captured the interest and imagination of our students, bringing history to life and providing a powerful visual link to the experiences of those who served during wartime. Throughout the day, students explored the significance of the aircraft, learning about its role in British history and the courage of the pilots who flew it.

Our students participated in a poignant Remembrance Service, which provided a respectful opportunity for reflection, gratitude and remembrance. The service was attended by a number of distinguished guests and organisations whose support and commitment helped create a truly special occasion for our school community.

We welcomed representatives from Beamish Museum, whose expertise and historical knowledge helped bring the stories of those who served to life. Through their contribution, students gained a deeper understanding of the personal sacrifices made during times of conflict and the lasting impact of war on individuals, families and communities.

Furrowfield School was also privileged to work alongside the Royal British Legion and the British Legion Riders. Their presence added great significance to the event, and students greatly valued the opportunity to hear about the work undertaken to support serving personnel, veterans and their families. They helped reinforce the importance of remembrance and demonstrated how communities continue to honour those who have served.

We were delighted to welcome officers from Gateshead Council, whose attendance demonstrated the strength of partnership working across our local community and highlighted the importance of ensuring young people understand the significance of remembrance. Their support helped reinforce the value of civic responsibility, community cohesion and respect for those who have made sacrifices for the freedoms we enjoy today.

The day also strengthened our links with the Gateshead Field of Remembrance, helping students understand the local significance of remembrance and how communities come together to honour those who have given their lives in service. Students explored the symbolism behind remembrance activities and reflected upon the importance of preserving these traditions for future generations.

We were further honoured to welcome the Deputy Mayor, whose attendance highlighted the importance of the occasion and demonstrated the value that our local community places upon remembrance, citizenship and education. Their presence helped reinforce the importance of community, service and respect and provided students with a memorable opportunity to engage with local civic leaders.

Throughout the day, students participated in a wide range of curriculum activities linked to history, English, citizenship, art and personal development. They explored the stories of servicemen and women, created remembrance-themed artwork, participated in reflective writing activities and engaged in thoughtful discussions about courage, sacrifice, resilience and service to others.

The event perfectly reflected the values of the Furrowfield Way. Students demonstrated respect, reflection and maturity throughout the day, engaging thoughtfully with sensitive topics and showing genuine appreciation for the significance of remembrance. The experience provided powerful opportunities to develop empathy, historical understanding and respect for those who have served both past and present.

Through experiences such as this, Furrowfield School continues to provide rich SMSC opportunities that help students become informed, respectful and responsible citizens. Remembrance Day was not only a powerful learning experience but also a valuable opportunity for our students to understand the importance of community, service, sacrifice and reflection.
