As a school working towards the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Gold Award, we ensure that children's rights are not simply taught but are actively lived and experienced through our curriculum, safeguarding culture, therapeutic provision, behaviour systems, student leadership opportunities, enrichment programmes and daily relationships. Every decision we make is underpinned by a commitment to ensuring that students are safe, respected, listened to, included and empowered to achieve their full potential. These principles are explicitly linked to all areas of our Staff Handbook, ensuring that every member of staff understands their collective responsibility in promoting, protecting and upholding the rights of every student.
Our Rights Respecting approach aligns seamlessly with the Furrowfield Way, which is rooted in the development of the key Habits of Mind identified by Costa and Kallick. Through our focus on being Imaginative, Inquisitive, Resilient, Reflective and Collaborative, students learn to understand both their rights and their responsibilities within a respectful and inclusive community. We believe that empowering students with a strong understanding of their rights develops confident learners who can think critically, communicate effectively, show empathy towards others and contribute positively to society. Rights Respecting values are visible throughout lessons, assemblies, tutor time, restorative practice, therapeutic interventions, leadership opportunities and enrichment activities, ensuring that they become a natural part of students' everyday experiences.
This work makes a significant contribution to the development of students' personal development, behaviour and attitudes, safeguarding, wellbeing and preparation for adulthood, reflecting key Ofsted priorities. Student voice is actively promoted through our Student Council, UNICEF ambassador activities, debate sessions and consultation opportunities, enabling students to influence school improvement and understand the importance of democratic participation. Through our broad and ambitious curriculum, students develop an awareness of equality, diversity, inclusion and protected characteristics, while learning to respect the rights, views and experiences of others.
Our therapeutic and relational approach further strengthens this commitment. Through the work of our Therapeutic Assessment and Support Centre (TASC), pastoral systems, safeguarding team and wider staff, students are supported to feel safe, develop emotional literacy, build resilience and understand how to advocate for themselves and others. By creating a culture where every student is valued and every voice matters, we ensure that rights, respect and responsibility remain at the heart of school life. This enables students to flourish academically, socially and emotionally while becoming kind, thoughtful and empowered young people who are ready to make a positive contribution to modern British society.
