Computing Curriculum Intent

At Furrowfield School, we recognise that digital technology plays an increasingly significant role in everyday life, education, and employment. Our Computing curriculum is designed to meet the diverse needs of our pupils, including those with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism, Cognition and Learning difficulties, and Complex Needs. Through an ambitious, engaging, and inclusive curriculum, we aim to develop confident, responsible, and creative users of technology who are prepared for life in a rapidly evolving digital world.



Our curriculum provides pupils with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to understand and use a wide range of digital technologies. Beginning with the safe and effective use of digital systems, pupils develop their understanding of computer networks, online communication, digital media, and information technology. We place a strong emphasis on digital citizenship, helping pupils to understand how to use technology safely, responsibly, and respectfully while protecting themselves and others online.

Computational thinking lies at the heart of our curriculum. Pupils develop their ability to solve problems logically, think critically, and break down complex tasks into manageable steps. Through programming activities, including block-based coding, Python programming, app development, physical computing, and machine learning, pupils gain practical experience of creating digital solutions and understanding how technology shapes the modern world.

We believe that pupils should be creators of technology as well as consumers. Through studying web development, animation, graphic design, data science, digital media, and app creation, pupils are encouraged to be creative, innovative, and independent learners. Practical projects enable pupils to apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts whilst developing resilience, communication, and collaboration skills.

As pupils progress through the curriculum, they develop an understanding of how data is represented, collected, analysed, and used. They learn to work with spreadsheets, databases, and data modelling tools, enabling them to make informed decisions and understand the importance of data in modern society. Pupils also explore emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, augmented reality, machine learning, and the Internet of Everything, helping them appreciate the opportunities and challenges presented by technological advancement.

Online safety and cybersecurity are embedded throughout our curriculum. Pupils learn about digital risks, cyber threats, privacy, legislation, and ethical responsibilities. We aim to equip pupils with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the online world safely and responsibly whilst developing an understanding of how technology affects individuals, organisations, and society.

In Key Stage 4, pupils build upon their knowledge through the Cambridge Nationals in Information Technologies qualification. They develop practical and transferable skills in areas such as digital communications, augmented reality, spreadsheet development, data handling, human-computer interaction, cybersecurity, and project design. These experiences prepare pupils for further education, employment, and careers within an increasingly digital economy.

Ultimately, our intent is that every pupil leaves Furrowfield School as a confident, capable, and responsible user of technology. We aim to equip pupils with the digital literacy, problem-solving skills, creativity, and resilience needed to thrive in modern society, participate safely in the digital world, and access a wide range of future opportunities.
