Our curriculum develops pupils' knowledge of both human and physical geography, helping them understand how natural processes, people, and environments interact. Beginning with geographical skills such as map reading, atlas work, fieldwork, and data analysis, pupils develop the tools needed to investigate and interpret the world around them. Through the study of local, national, and global environments, pupils gain confidence in using geographical knowledge to make sense of current issues and events.
We encourage pupils to explore a diverse range of places, cultures, and environments. Through studies of regions including Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and contrasting locations across the UK and the wider world, pupils develop an appreciation of diversity and gain a deeper understanding of how physical and human processes shape different communities and landscapes.
A key aim of our curriculum is to develop pupils' awareness of environmental challenges and their role as global citizens. Through learning about climate change, sustainability, natural hazards, resource management, development, migration, urbanisation, and ecosystem management, pupils are encouraged to think critically about the impact of human activity on the planet and consider how positive change can be achieved.
We place particular importance on helping pupils understand the relevance of Geography to their everyday lives. By exploring topics such as weather, rivers, coasts, populations, cities, climate systems, and natural hazards, pupils learn how geographical processes affect the communities in which they live and the wider world. Opportunities for fieldwork and practical investigation further support pupils in developing independence, enquiry skills, and real-world understanding.
At Key Stage 4, pupils build upon their prior knowledge through the study of more complex geographical concepts, including urban issues and challenges, ecosystems, climate change, economic development, resource management, coasts, rivers, and natural hazards. Pupils also undertake fieldwork and geographical investigations, enabling them to apply their learning, develop analytical skills, and prepare for further education, employment, and life beyond school.
Ultimately, our intent is that every pupil leaves Furrowfield School with a greater understanding of the world, an appreciation of different people and places, and the confidence to engage with environmental and societal issues. We aim to equip pupils with the geographical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and global awareness needed to become informed, responsible, and active citizens in an ever-changing world.
