We recognise that our pupils arrive with a wide range of strengths, barriers, and prior experiences. Therefore, our curriculum is carefully sequenced and adapted to ensure all learners can access meaningful learning while being appropriately challenged. We aim to develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through personalised support, explicit teaching, repetition, and opportunities to apply learning in real-life contexts.
Reading is at the heart of our English curriculum. Through exposure to a broad range of high-quality texts, pupils develop vocabulary, comprehension, imagination, and cultural awareness. We strive to foster a love of reading whilst helping pupils make sense of the world around them. Literature provides opportunities for pupils to explore different perspectives, develop empathy, understand emotions, and build resilience through shared experiences and discussion.
Communication is central to everything we do. We recognise that many of our pupils require support in understanding, expressing, and regulating their thoughts and emotions. Through structured speaking and listening activities, discussion, drama, storytelling, and collaborative learning, pupils develop the confidence to express themselves, advocate for their needs, and form positive relationships with others.
Writing is taught as both a functional life skill and a creative form of self-expression. Pupils are supported to communicate their ideas, experiences, and opinions with increasing independence and confidence. We explicitly teach vocabulary, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and handwriting, ensuring pupils develop the literacy skills needed for further education, employment, and everyday life.
Our curriculum also places a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, self-reflection, and personal development. Through carefully chosen texts and purposeful learning experiences, pupils learn to understand themselves, manage challenges, appreciate diversity, and develop respect for others.
Ultimately, our intent is that every pupil leaves Furrowfield School as a more confident communicator, capable reader, and purposeful writer than when they arrived. We aspire for our pupils to develop the literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills that will enable them to participate fully in society, navigate the challenges of adult life, and achieve their individual potential.
