At Furrowfield School, Heart to Heart Day celebrated on the Friday nearest Valentne's Day is a carefully planned whole-school SMSC drop-down curriculum experience that exemplifies our commitment to delivering an ambitious, knowledge-rich and highly personalised curriculum. Rooted in our Furrowfield Way and informed by the research of Costa and Kallick's Habits of Mind, the day provides meaningful opportunities for students to develop the key characteristics that underpin success in learning and life: being Inquisitive, Imaginative, Resilient, Reflective and Collaborative. Through carefully designed cross-curricular activities, students are encouraged to question, investigate, create, analyse and work together, whilst making meaningful connections between academic learning, personal development and future life skills.Â
Throughout the day, students explore the science of the human heart, investigating its anatomy, size, structure and function. They learn how the heart pumps blood throughout the body, examine circulation and cardiovascular health, and use scientific enquiry skills to investigate how lifestyle choices can impact physical wellbeing. These experiences encourage students to be Inquisitive, asking questions, exploring evidence and developing a deeper understanding of the human body. Students also demonstrate Resilience through practical investigations and problem-solving activities that require perseverance, accuracy and reflection.
Physical Education lessons further develop students' understanding of health and wellbeing by exploring heart rate, fitness and exercise. Students measure and compare their heartbeats during different activities, interpret data and reflect upon the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles. Through this work, students develop the Habit of Mind of being Reflective, considering how their choices affect both their physical and mental wellbeing and identifying ways to improve their own health outcomes.Â
The creative and expressive arts form a key feature of Heart to Heart Day. Through English, Music and the Arts, students explore how the heart has been represented throughout history in poetry, literature, songs and artistic expression. They study themes of love, friendship, compassion, loss and hope through romantic poetry and music from different cultures and periods of time. These experiences encourage students to be Imaginative, developing creativity, empathy and emotional literacy whilst strengthening their ability to express thoughts, feelings and ideas confidently and respectfully.Â
A central feature of the day is our commitment to safeguarding, citizenship and preparation for adulthood. Every student and member of staff participates in CPR and life-saving first aid training, equipping the whole school community with practical knowledge that has the potential to save lives. Students learn how to recognise an emergency, seek help appropriately and perform basic CPR procedures, developing confidence, responsibility and community awareness. These experiences promote the Habit of Mind of being Collaborative, as students work together, support one another and understand the importance of helping others within their community.Â
For Key Stage 4 students, Heart to Heart Day includes carefully planned and age-appropriate learning about healthy relationships, respect, personal boundaries and the importance of consent. Through discussion, reflection and scenario-based learning, students develop an understanding of mutual respect, equality, personal responsibility and safeguarding. This supports Furrowfield School's commitment to preparing students for life in modern Britain and contributes significantly to their social, moral and emotional development. Students are encouraged to become Reflective and Thoughtful citizens who understand the importance of making safe, informed and respectful choices within relationships.
Heart to Heart Day makes a significant contribution to students' Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development, Personal Development, Health Education and Preparation for Adulthood. By bringing together science, physical wellbeing, literature, music, safeguarding, relationships education and life-saving first aid, the day enables students to make meaningful connections across the curriculum while developing the essential Habits of Mind that sit at the heart of the Furrowfield Way. Through an engaging blend of academic learning, personal reflection and practical experiences, students leave the day better equipped to understand themselves, care for others and contribute positively to society. Through our ethos of 'Together We Succeed', students are empowered to become confident, inquisitive, reflective, resilient, imaginative and collaborative individuals who are prepared for successful futures.
