Reading is embedded across all aspects of school life and reflects our commitment to improving life chances through an ambitious, inclusive and knowledge-rich curriculum. A key feature of our provision is our dedicated Reading Room, which provides a welcoming, calm and purposeful environment where students can explore and enjoy books independently and with others. Students have access to a diverse and carefully curated range of texts, including classic and contemporary fiction, non-fiction, biographies, graphic novels, poetry, magazines and texts that reflect different cultures, experiences and perspectives. This broad offer helps to promote equality, diversity and inclusion while ensuring that every student can see themselves reflected in what they read and explore viewpoints beyond their own experiences.

To promote reading engagement and improve literacy outcomes, all students participate in dedicated Reading for Enjoyment lessons. These sessions provide opportunities to read widely, discuss texts, develop reading stamina and build confidence as readers. Through skilled staff support and carefully selected texts, students are encouraged to develop positive reading habits and discover the pleasure that reading can bring. Reading is celebrated regularly through assemblies, book recommendations, author spotlights and whole-school literacy initiatives that reinforce the importance of reading across the curriculum. 

Reading also plays a significant role in preparing students for adulthood. Through Reading for Careers lessons, students explore texts linked to employment sectors, further education opportunities and the world of work. These lessons support the development of essential literacy, communication and vocabulary skills while helping students understand how reading contributes to future success. By explicitly linking literacy to career aspirations, students are better equipped to make informed decisions about their next steps and future pathways.

Reading is further enhanced through a rich programme of events and celebrations throughout the year. World Book Day is a highlight of our school calendar and provides opportunities for students to engage with authors, literature and creative reading activities. Assemblies regularly promote books, reading role models and current themes, helping to inspire curiosity and encourage discussion. Together, these experiences create a vibrant reading culture where books are valued, reading is celebrated and students are supported to become informed, knowledgeable and confident readers.
