Physical Education Curriculum

Physical Education Curriculum Intent

At Furrowfield School, we believe that Physical Education plays a vital role in promoting physical health, emotional wellbeing, confidence, and personal development. Our PE curriculum is designed to meet the diverse needs of our pupils, including those with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism, Cognition and Learning difficulties, and Complex Needs. Through a broad, inclusive, and engaging programme of activities, we aim to inspire all pupils to lead active, healthy lifestyles and develop a lifelong appreciation of physical activity.

We recognise that pupils arrive with varying levels of confidence, experience, and physical ability. Our curriculum is therefore carefully structured to provide opportunities for every pupil to experience success, build resilience, and make progress from their individual starting points. Through participation in a range of team games, individual sports, fitness-based activities, athletics, and trampolining, pupils develop physical competence, coordination, and an understanding of movement and performance.

Our curriculum promotes the development of essential personal and social skills, including communication, cooperation, leadership, self-discipline, and respect for others. Through participation in sport and physical activity, pupils learn how to work as part of a team, cope with challenge, celebrate success, and manage setbacks positively. These skills support pupils not only within PE lessons but also across the wider curriculum and in everyday life.

At Furrowfield School, we place a strong emphasis on health, fitness, and wellbeing. Pupils develop an understanding of how exercise affects the body, why physical activity is important, and how healthy lifestyle choices contribute to both physical and mental wellbeing. They are encouraged to take responsibility for their own health and to recognise the positive impact that physical activity can have on confidence, resilience, emotional regulation, and overall quality of life.

As pupils progress into Key Stage 4, they further develop their knowledge of fitness, performance, and personal improvement. They learn to assess their own strengths and areas for development, plan training programmes, evaluate performance, and understand how physical activity can support future aspirations. Through developing personal progression plans, pupils are supported to identify pathways into further education, employment, training, and recreational sport.

Ultimately, our intent is that every pupil leaves Furrowfield School with the confidence, knowledge, and motivation to participate in physical activity throughout their lives. We aim to equip our pupils with the physical, social, and emotional skills needed to maintain healthy lifestyles, develop positive relationships, and achieve their individual potential both within and beyond school.
