Our curriculum provides pupils with a coherent chronological understanding of British, local, and world history. Beginning with the foundations of historical enquiry, pupils develop the skills to ask questions, investigate evidence, explore different interpretations, and understand concepts such as cause and consequence, significance, change, and continuity. These skills enable pupils to think critically and form informed opinions based on evidence.
We place a strong emphasis on local history and the rich heritage of the North East, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections between their own communities and wider historical events. Through studying topics such as the English Civil War, local history, the Industrial Revolution, and the development of Britain, pupils gain an appreciation of how historical events have shaped the society in which they live today.
As pupils progress through Key Stage 3, they explore significant periods and events that have influenced Britain and the wider world, including the Middle Ages, the Tudors, the British Empire, the World Wars, slavery, and the Civil Rights Movement. Through these studies, pupils develop an understanding of diversity, conflict, migration, democracy, and social change, whilst reflecting on the experiences and perspectives of different individuals and groups throughout history.
At Furrowfield School, we recognise the importance of helping pupils understand complex social and moral issues. Historical study encourages pupils to examine concepts such as justice, equality, power, prejudice, and human rights. By exploring topics including slavery, war, colonialism, and civil rights, pupils are given opportunities to develop empathy, tolerance, and respect for others whilst learning valuable lessons from the past.
In Key Stage 4, pupils broaden their understanding of global history through the study of topics such as the Settlement of the American West, Global Piracy, Ancient Greece, the Crimean War, the Cold War, and Thatcherism. These units develop pupils' ability to analyse historical events, understand their significance, and make connections across different periods and regions of the world. Pupils also work towards recognised AQA Unit Awards, celebrating achievement and supporting progression.
Ultimately, our intent is that every pupil leaves Furrowfield School with a greater understanding of the past and its impact on modern society. We aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, cultural awareness, and confidence to engage with the world around them, understand different perspectives, and make informed contributions to their communities and future lives.
